Jobs a Marketing Manager Should Do (And Those They Shouldn’t)

Turning the blurred lines of job responsibilities into crystal clear borders 🪄

Marketing is an industry that tends to be surrounded by ambiguity, from endless acronyms to the mysterious world of algorithms. However, there is one thing that should be made obvious: what should be expected from marketing managers.

This blog will clear up the role of a marketing manager for those who are:

  • In a marketing manager position that has unclear responsibilities.

  • Interested parties in the process of hiring a marketing manager who aren’t clear on the duties they can outsource.

  • Business owners who already have a marketing manager but want more tasks to be alleviated from their workload.

Jobs a Marketing Manager Should Do ✅

First things first, the main responsibility of a marketing manager is to spread the word.

This includes generating brand awareness, promoting a brand’s message, creating an engaged community, nurturing relationships and converting customers which can be done by utilising the following:

  • Organic social media 📲

  • Paid advertising 💰

  • Email marketing 📧

  • Blog writing 📝

  • Print marketing 📫

As they are the expert in this field, you should expect to have a cohesive, focused marketing strategy in place that takes into consideration the business’s main objectives and how these can be achieved using the above methods.

Not only should they develop the campaigns that will carry out this strategy, but they should also be hands-on with the content creation process and the follow-up reporting to ensure the business is being represented in an effective, coordinated manner.

Jobs a Marketing Manager SHOULDN’T Do 🚫

A common misconception when it comes to the responsibilities of a marketing manager is that anything digital or customer-focused should be a part of their role.

Although a majority of marketing managers will have an understanding of the following topics, this isn’t where their expertise lies. Here are a few jobs that should be another dedicated role entirely:

  • Website design 💻  This is a completely different role to a marketing manager. Although you might find someone with experience in both fields, it’s best not to over-saturate a position as you’ll find the quality of all responsibilities will start to diminish.

  • Sales 🛒 As one of the responsibilities of a marketing manager is outbound marketing (getting in front of potential customers) it can be easily confused with sales. The marketing team grows the list of interested parties, whereas the sales team is there to “close the deal”.

  • Customer service 💬  There is a fine line between some of the responsibilities of customer service and marketing. Although responding to comments in an on-brand tone would sit more within the marketing department, the process of responding to customer queries, issues and feedback would be taken care of by the customer service team.
