5 Things You Need to Market Your Business

Without having any of these, your job is unnecessarily 10 times harder 👀

If you’re here, you’ve decided that you’re going to give your business the attention it deserves through marketing.

You might be thinking “how hard can it be?” and if this is the case, I applaud your optimism. But, to keep your positive streak (and sanity) intact, I’m sharing five things you need to market your own business so that the entire process is easier and more effective.

A Content Bank 📸

Before you develop your online presence, I strongly recommend investing in a photographer/videographer to develop a content bank.

Having photos and videos that reflect your company’s personality, tone and brand will set you apart from competitors that are using offputting stock imagery or bland, overused UGC (User Generated Content).

Strong Branding 🔗

A common issue when it comes to business owners doing their own marking is that their personality starts to blend and merge with that of the business. You and your business are two separate entities and should be treated as such.

So, make sure that you have your colour schemes, fonts, tone of voice etc solidified before you start sharing content so that your audience can start to connect with and recognise your brand.

A Scheduling Platform 💻

If the thought of just posting whenever you feel like it has crossed your mind, I’m going to put a stop to that immediately because guess what? You’ll never “feel like it”.

Instead, create a weekly or monthly content calendar which clearly sets out which channels you’re going to use and what you’re going to post. Then, invest in a scheduling platform (Agorapulse is my personal favourite) that will remove all of the pressure of posting manually.

Spare Time ⏰

If you already feel like you’re pushed for time and close to running on empty, taking on your own marketing is not the right decision. For example, “marketing” includes the following:

  • Research into best practices and current trends

  • Strategy planning

  • Campaign development

  • Content creation

  • Scheduling and manually posting

  • Inbound and outbound engagement

  • Reporting and analysis

So it isn’t a quick fix. And, if it’s done poorly, it might as well not be done at all. So, consider outsourcing your marketing so that you can focus on other areas of your business that need your attention.

Resilience 💪🏼

As with all aspects of owning a business, when it comes to marketing you have to be resilient.

Things that might not have previously seemed important to you can soon be taken personally when the responsibilities of marketing are in your lap, such as a reel under-performing, a negative comment on Facebook, a scheduled email not being sent…

Unfortunately, when working with digital platforms and a wide audience, these things happen. But, resilience is an underrated characteristic that will set you apart from businesses that don’t continue to grow.
